Frankfurt Motor Show 2013 – preview

IAA

It’s Showtime: We’re at the 65th International Motor Show in Frankfurt – what do you want to see from the show?

The team from NRMA DriverSeat is in Germany this week to visit the bi-annual Frankfurt Motor Show, one of the world’s premier auto fairs. We’ll bring you news and pictures from the event as they happen via this blog, our Facebook page and our Twitter feeds, and we’d love to hear from you – what do you want to see?

We’ll be driving the a new Mazda3, which has already been revealed in part to Australian media – you can read that story HERE.  Mazda calls the car the “most important” in its history, and as one of Australia’s top-selling cars for the last few years, it’s not hard to see why.

There are several other launches of interest at the Frankfurt Show, including Nissan’s all-new X-Trail, BMW’s amazing high-performance i8 plug-in hybrid – a pointer to its hatchback-sized, ‘real world’ i3 -, Audi’s Quattro Sport Concept and several luxury SUV concepts from Jaguar (above), Lexus and Infinity.

What’s different about the concept cars displayed at Frankfurt is that many of them actually make it into production; the i8, for example, was a concept at the 2011 show. Citroen will display a concept SUV called the Cactus (above), which is said to be in final stages of production testing. It’s rumoured to sport a unique compressed air/diesel hybrid arrangement that could replace electric motors and batteries.

It’s not just the cars that take centre stage at Frankfurt, either. As home to the world’s premier German brands, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz go to extraordinary lengths to construct elaborate and complex pavilions at Frankfurt, often incorporating test tracks within the walls of the stands themselves.

Make sure you click back onto this blog for daily updates direct from Frankfurt; the first will be live Wednesday morning.
